Brakiri are a male dominated
patriarchal society, but under the corporate government of the Krona
women have gained significant opportunities to rise to prominent
position and sexism is waning. Brakiri prize success, money,
happiness, and comfort. They tend to be iconic and cliquey.
While the Brakiri get along very well with humans and the Centauri
prior to the war in 2263, the do not mesh well with other races.
Unlike the other races,
the Brakiri have a unique "Syndicracy" based form of government.
This corporation based governing system consists of a council of
some 500 corporate appointees known as the Krona. The Krona
run all Brakiri planetary affairs and head the planet's military.
Of the corporations that
make up the Krona, the most powerful appointed are the Smugglers
Guild, and the titanic computer software/hardware manufacture known
as "Maximum Clash Inc." The primary concern of the
Krona is the maintenance of the Brakiri economy. Unlike the
bureaucracy ridden governments of the other races, the Brakiri believe
that the job of the government is to get business done quickly,
in order to assure that the Brakiri people prosper. As such
the Brakiri are renowned for getting things done with great efficiency
and expediency.
The Brakiri civilization
has existed for approximately 6,000 years. Due to the
fact that the Brakiri corporate structure is unfathomably rigid,
so much so that upward mobility in Brakiri culture is virtual impossible,
the Brakiri have a huge middle and lower class that lives in a constant
state of frustration.
This lead to the creation
of a massive criminal underclass called Chadis, that makes
the Earth and Mars Mafia look like Girl Scouts. Crime lords
rule the world below the corporate level and their presence can
be felt readily outside the Brakiri home system. Violence
and corruption lurk in every corner and many Brakiri have turned
to leaving their home world to escape the constant struggle to succeed
in a system designed to keep you where you are.
Brakiri social structure
is very similar to that of Earth back in the 20th and
21st century. These similarities are not coincidental;
as Earth was the first race the Brakiri made contact with.
Some 200 years ago, when the Brakiri first began to explore the
possibility of life on other worlds, the Brakiri were able to record
television and radio signal that had originated on Earth.
Earth television became a subject of fascination for the Brakiri
and much of their cultural mores grew out of their study of ancient
Earth.
Upon leaving their home
world for the first time, the Brakiri set out to find humanity.
So accustomed had they become to receiving human transmissions,
the Brakiri came to consider humanity their cousin race and went
to great lengths to emulate humanity. After making first contact
with the Earth Alliance, who too had finally reached the stars thanks
to the Centauri, both races quickly opened up trade relations and
have been close trading partners ever since.
It is worth noting that
the Brakiri, to this day, are in desperate search of a lost television
episode from Earth, the episode from "Dallas" where it
was finally revealed who shot J.R. There is a 2 billion-credit
reward to any information merchant who can acquire the transmission
from space, as no copy of this long lost TV show has ever been found
on Earth.
The main goal of a Brakiri
is success in business - any business. The drive for success
colors every facet of life on Brakos. Success is the ruler
with which a Brakiri measures his/her self-worth, and the Brakiri's
almost ruthless desire to succeed should not be taken for granted.
Despite popular misconceptions,
the Brakiri are not very advanced technologically. The Brakiri
have only been in possession of interstellar flight for some 150
years. While very proficient at communications, transport
and security/audio-visual technology, their space fairing technology
was well below the technological level of the Earth Alliance or
Narn Regime.
One misconception made
often by those less informed races is that the Brakiri had gravity
technology prior to the incorporation of the Interstellar Alliance
in 2263. This is NOT true. While their ships appeared
sleek and powerful they possessed NO artificial gravity technology
prior to 2265. Weapons are based on technology obtained from
the Centauri Republic prior to the Earth/Minbari war and battle-lasers
and plasma weapons comprise the mainstay of the Brakiri's arsenal.
While famous for "talking
tough" the Brakiri's military might is negligible. Their
ships are quite inferior to Earth Alliance ships, as are their weapons.
While the Brakiri are renowned as being one of the few League races
in possession of large scale capital ships, this is not a true sign
of Brakiri military strength. As stated above, the Brakiri
enjoy flaunting and appearances are very important to them.
The primary reason for the construction of large-scale capital ships
was to maintain the appearance they so desperately wanted to convey
to the other races. Put simply, it was a race of status to
keep up with the Earth Alliance and the Centauri Republic, who were
their primary trading partners at the time of the Avioki's class
Cruiser's deployment.
The Brakiri have very
few colonies. The only major colony held by the Brakiri is
the planet Kara, second planet in their home solar system.
Kara was opened for exploration some 87 years ago. Few in
Brakiri society have taken advantage of the colony but those that
have are engaged in a fierce war for primacy. Only other Brakiri
holdings of note are their asteroid mining outputs on the fringe
of their home solar system, which are rich in the valuable Quantium
40 ore needed for jump gate construction.
