SCALE - NOVA CLASS DREADNOUGHT

There has recently been some debate with regards to the Nova, with some people claiming that the Nova and Omega, despite being based upon the same design and space frame, are not in proportion to each other and thus the Nova is not within the scale of 1400 meters. Thus I'm going to do a little experiment to see if this is true or not.

Pictured above is an image from the episode "Gropos" showing the EAS Schwartzkoph next to the Babylon 5 station. Due to perspective and camera angle there is no way to to a 100% accurate scaling but we can get a close approximation. They yellow lines represent size hard lines along the Nova's X-axis that head towards the station. I have elongated these lines in order to reduce the problem of perspective. Red lines represent the center Z-axis of the Babylon 5 station's non rotating section, as we will be using this in conjunctions with the center Z-axis line through the station's docking port to determine length.

Now, the large glowing green line represents the length of the Nova along the station's center Z-axis, laid over the top of the station and placed in the same direction as the station's upper most center line. My choice for doing this is due to the fact this area will give us a good measuring point, as the features on the upper deck can be used to measure length on the Babylon 5 map offered in the B5 Security Manual, page 13.

Green line starts at the front of the station's mandibles and goes almost all the way back to the area where the mandible block section meets the next block that houses the deep space communications array. On the B5 map the distance shown above is 5.2 centimeters. Every millimeter equals roughly 27.027 meters. 52 * 27.027= 1405.4 meters, which does indeed fit with the Nova being in proportion with the Omega at 1717+ meters.

Here we see yet another image from "Gropos", from yet another angle. Now, due to the image not being the best and the steep perspective, using this image to scale is a little more difficult than in the first image. Scaling is also hindered by there not being a solid object to gage length, as with the zero-g yellow section. As before I measured our the size of the Nova as best I could, the red glowing line representing the center length of the Nova, compared to (again) the upper most deck of the station.

Placing the starting point at the housing for the station's forward rotational drivers, the line stretches back to the end of the grill, where the furthest south component of blue sector meets red sector. This came to about 4.1 centimeters and that would put the length. of the Nova at 1108.1 meters, but given the perspective this figure is less accurate than the one above, as it was almost impossible to adjust properly for perspective.

Here we have another image of the Nova, again at a very steep perspective, but somewhat easier to manage than the last. Using this image and the schematic from the security manual, I've blocked out an area and compared it to the station. Areas marked on the Nova are from the crease on the forward section, to the peak of the engine housing. When compared to the station, this comes to approximately 756.8 meters. Take into account the rest of the Nova's length, and the Nova comes out to 1,154 meters, better ilistrated in the image below.

This, of course, fits my original size estimate for the Nova which everyone complained about beint too short. :op

There are of course more scenes available, which can be used to gage scale, like the image of the Nova striking the Sharlin featured left, from the TV movie "In the Beginning." Given size estimates on the Sharlin, which place the Minbari War-Cruiser at approximately 1,600 meters in length, the Nova again coming to roughly 1,400 some odd meters in length., placing it into proportion with the Omega, minus the rotating section.

Final conclusion? The Nova is based on the same space frame as the Omega class Destroyer and in the same proportions as the Omega. Only difference between the Omega and the Nova is weapons load-out and the distinct lack of a rotating section on the Nova, suggesting that the Nova is indeed 1455.6 meters in length.
